Sugar Paper

by Erin Ferucci
Celebrity Lifestyle Designer

Romance is essential to living well, but it doesn’t have to be difficult, overly expensive or time consuming. You don’t have to do something big if you are willing to do something fabulous, the difference is in the details. You need a card, but rather than settle for a “Hallmark” moment, why not spend a little more and get a card of some real distinction?
I recently visited a quaint little shop in Brentwood that had really fine quality cards and paper. Sugar Paper, the brainchild of Jamie Grobecker and Chelsea Shukov is a luxury stationary store offering fine papers with antique letterpress accents and fine stitching that is all but extinct in today’s printing technology.
The store offers a full line of stationary and custom printing options but I fell in love with these charming cards that simply say, “You had me at Hello!” Who doesn’t want to hear that? Whether you are a Jerry Maguire fan or not the sentiment is wonderfully romantic. What a lovely Valentine to give this truly distinctive card and a small box of decadent gourmet chocolate truffles from Teuscher Chocolates (more on them in the next blog).
Sugar Paper is lovely both the product and the shop. I love how they displayed their custom stationary wall by painting it pink and using white inexpensive frames to showcase their custom work!!
I also loved the "stationary bar"…so cute!! and the banquette in the window...very girlie! very charming!...it even smells really good too!! Visit Sugar Paper and this Valentine’s Day give a distinctive gift to show the depth of your feeling.

I Just Can't Get Enough!

By Erin Ferucci
Celebrity Lifestyle Designer

I just cannot get enough of Suzanis. I know they were all the rage last year with designers, but now they have gotten me!! In a good way! This is Anne Becker's home in Manhattan. Photographed for the March 2009 issue for Elle Décor by Simon Upton. It’s everywhere.....
Photos courtesy of House Beautiful......
Cheerful no?
For real antique Suzanis visit Ruzzetti & Gow via their website or New York showroom.
Christopher Gow of Ruzzeti & Gow is a treasure trove of information on these wonderful designs.
According to Gow, "Most of the suzanis were prepared and used for ceremonial functions like wedding dowries and furnishings for the bridal bed or the embellishment of reception rooms and trappings for horses and their riders. As such the antique ones usually have some signs of age especially with the black colored embroidery: the black dye does not age as well as the others and is the first to wear away, leaving designs that were not originally intended but sometimes equally as interesting.
Given the general “not perfect” condition and the dramatic patterns of the Suzanis it takes someone with a lot of style to pull it off! Usually I only used to see them in European homes but now they are popping up more in American homes and they look great!"

My friend Martyn Lawrence Bullard
has even re-created the "Suzanni" pattern into his own fabric line.
He loves Suzanni's so much, they were the inspiration for his new candle line.Note the packaging. I love it!

The Jean-Michel Frank Desk

by Erin Ferucci
Celebrity Lifestyle Designer

Everyone needs a great desk. Hands down, this is my favorite desk of all time. This is the kind of desk you dream of owning.Known as the President Desk, it was designed in 1930 by my all time favorite designer, Jean-Michel Frank in Paris. (1895-1941) Frank was known for his minimalist style which is both elegant and functional.

Currently this exclusive desk is distributed by Ecart International, Paris. And is available through the trade only at Ralph Pucci . They have showrooms in New York and Los Angeles offering a wide range of fine quality Jean-Michel Frank designs, including his famous "club chair".

The desk comes in four finishes: black, brown, natural and wengee stain - all on oak.
I prefer the light oak (above). The desk is currently owned by Steven Speilberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen, to name a few. Clearly this desk has seen more than one million dollar idea cross it's smooth finish.

Presidential Chandeliers?

by Erin Ferucci
Celebrity Lifestyle Designer

Its official we have a new President. For the first time in a long time (okay, ever) the White House will be housing a younger, hipper sensibility. Can you say design coup? The design nod went to Michael Smith. Congratulations Michael! For those of us in the trade it has been a fun month seeing all of the items that Michael has spec’d for the White House. My suggestion? These amazing “armless” chandelier sculptures.
If you look closely you can see that each piece of the chandelier is suspended independently. It gives this magical, elegant feeling as if the light is floating in space. They are so unique and original that they really capture the WOW factor, just like the first couple. I love them!

We’ll have to wait and see what makes the cut in the White House, but I vote for these magical chandeliers from Moura Starr!

Dan Marty Designs

By Erin Ferucci
Celebrity Lifestyle Designer

For years Dan Marty had a smart little retail shop in Brentwood that catered to the public. Now he has made the smart leap to Wholesale and has opened his business to the trade, nationwide.
For a year now his well designed showroom in the Pacific Design Center has featured his self described “European Colonial meets California laid back ease” sensibility. The key word here is layering; I especially appreciate the imported antique French linens for sale and applied on pillows and sofas. The navy themes..the red collections, the layering… is so warm and cozy..so welcoming… nothing intimidating here.!!!! This look is easy for anyone to accomplish..it feels very "family" to me...warm and inviting. The space is superbly defined with black sisal flooring and black walls, it’s a great effect. Very courageous, but it works. The staff is also wonderful and very helpful with no attitude problems, you have to love that!
